The Commander and Chief of the U.S. Military, Joe Biden, ordered B-2 stealth bombers to attack five weapons storage sites belonging to Houthi rebels in Yemen on Wednesday.
“These actions were taken to degrade the Houthi’s capability to continue their reckless and unlawful attacks on international commercial shipping and on U.S., coalition, and merchant personnel and vessels in the Red Sea, Bab Al-Mandeb Strait, and the Gulf of Aden, and to degrade their ability to threaten regional partners,” a U.S. Central Command press release said Wednesday.
The strikes hit underground weapons stashes.
“U.S. forces targeted several of the Houthis’ underground facilities housing various weapons components of types that the Houthis have used to target civilian and military vessels throughout the region,” Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III said in a statement, according to Fox News.
The U.S. bombing run came after Israeli forces struck Houthi’s in Yemen in late September.
The strike not only destroyed foreign weapons caches, it allegedly also sent a threatening message to other unrelated state actors.
The Secretary of Defense said the advanced $2 billion dollar bomber showed off the ability of the U.S. to orchestrate military strikes on a global scale at any time, according to Fox News on Thursday.
