A man from Canada is furious after his electric vehicle, which cost over six-figures, left him stranded during a trip to Chicago with his family, forcing him to rent a gas-powered vehicle to complete the journey.

The frustrating incident unfolded earlier this year after Winnipeg resident Dalbir Bala spent $115,000 Canadian dollars ($77,495 USD) on a Ford F150 Lightning electric truck, which required him to install two charging panels, one at home and one at work, at roughly $5,000 a pop.

He also needed to upgrade his home electric panel for $6,000, resulting in a total expenditure of over $130,000 on the EV vehicle.

The EV truck owner thought it was bizarre that Ford didn’t respond to his inquiries after a minor fender bender took over 6 months to repair, but he shrugged it off and went on to use the vehicle for a 1,400 family road trip to the Windy City.

That’s when the truck’s limitations became painfully apparent.

As the family traveled into the United States via North Dakota, one of their first stops at a charging station in Fargo lasted over two hours and cost $56, giving Bala a charge good for 215 additional miles.

However, things went from bad to worse when the family reached their next stop in Albertville, Minnesota, where the charging station did not work and calls to a provided phone number were unsuccessful.

After arriving at another charging station in Elk River about 10 miles away, Bala discovered it too was not working.

“This sheer helplessness was mind-boggling,” Bala wrote online, according to Fox Business. “My kids and wife were really worried and stressed at this point.”

With the nearest charging station further than the 12-mile estimated distance left on his vehicle, Bala realized his options had run dry.

“By now it was late afternoon. We were really stuck, hungry, and heartbroken,” he stated.

The disappointed dad had his EV towed to the Ford dealership in Elk River. Meanwhile, he rented a gas-powered vehicle to tackle the rest of the 400-miles left on his drive to Chicago. The family picked the truck up on their way back to Canada.

The agonizing road trip soured Bala on the entire EV industry, calling it a “scam” and warning consumers to do their research before they buy into the new technology.

“It was in [the] shop for 6 months. I can’t take it to my lake cabin. I cannot take it for off-grid camping. I cannot take for even a road trip,” he said. “I can only drive in city – biggest scam of modern times.”

“People have to make the right choices. I want to tell everybody to read my story,” Bala told Fox Business. “Do your research before even thinking about it and make a wiser choice.”

“The actual thing they promised is not even close. Not even 50%. And once you buy it, you’re stuck with it and you have to carry huge losses to get rid of that. And nobody is there to help you.”

Ford responded to Fox Business that they were sorry Bala experienced the inconvenient issue, but that it was the result of a lack of charging stations, weather and driving conditions.

“This customer’s experience highlights the urgent need to rapidly improve access to public charging across the US and Canada,” Ford said in its statement to Fox. “Ford’s EV-certified dealers will install public-facing DC fast chargers at their dealerships by early 2024, providing alternative charging options to those available today. Ford was also the first in the industry to gain access to over 12,000 Tesla Superchargers for Ford drivers.”

Bala’s testimony describing his unfortunate incident comes as other Ford Lightning consumers have experienced similar issues with the truck’s driving range. Ford in February paused production of the truck due to an unspecified battery issue.

Interestingly, Bala’s horror story comes as Ford Motor Company CEO Jim Farley recently wrapped up a three-day road trip from Silicon Valley to Las Vegas promoting the F-150 Lightning.
