U.S. Border Patrol Agent Monica Cruz came forward as a public whistleblower this week in collaboration with investigative journalist James O’Keefe, taking the muckraker on a journey to the U.S.-Mexico border where she revealed drug cartels are using teenagers to smuggle illegals into the country.
Adolescents ranging from ages 14-17 are being repeatedly apprehended by Border Patrol after being released back into Mexico thanks to a loophole in the immigration system where the juveniles voluntarily leave America.
The whistleblower took O’Keefe on a hike through Yuma, Arizona, to show him firsthand the trails being used by these young traffickers.
“These smugglers are teenagers, ranging in age from 14 to 17,” Cruz revealed. “Due to a loophole in American law, when these teenagers are apprehended, they are simply released back to Mexico, only to repeat the same smuggling route with no fear of legitimate consequences.”
A teenage coyote known as “Timmy” has been captured and released by the U.S. Border Patrol 20 times, with Cruz telling O’Keefe, “That means he smuggled people 20 times. But they’re [foot guides] doing it on behalf of somebody else. They’re doing it on behalf of the cartels. These smugglers, who happen to be juveniles, know they’re going to get caught. They already know they’ll be sent back. And even though they got caught, they still get paid because they’re brought in as decoys.”
The Mexican consulate in Yuma acts as an advocate on behalf of the young smugglers, according to Cruz.
O’Keefe wrote on social media that his organization “has reached out to [Border Czar] Tom Homan for comment on the use of juvenile foot guides by cartels and the legal loophole that allows them to be detained and released repeatedly, and are awaiting his response.”
With a proactive Trump administration actually addressing issues that concern the American people, it’s possible this loophole is terminated in the near future.
