People continue to flee California in their droves, according to the latest statistics from the US Census Bureau.
The data for 2023, released in 17 October, show that an estimated 422,000 people moved to California from other states, whereas 690,000 left the state for another. That equates to net negative domestic migration of 268,000.
The top five destination states for those leaving California were Texas, Arizona, Nevada, Washington, and Florida: around 39 percent of the domestic migration out of California went to these states.
The top five states people left when moving to California, on the other hand, were Texas, New York, Washington, Nevada, and Oregon.
Of the other three most populous states in the US—New York, Texas and Florida—only New York also had negative net domestic migration.
The outflow of California residents appears to be slowing, though. In 2021, 408,000 people left, and in 2022 342,000 left.
At the same time, California has seen a massive increase in foreign immigration. Last year over 315,000 people entered legally or illegally from foreign countries, an increase on last year (303,000) and a massive increase on the year before (just shy of 190,000).
Because the number of foreign immigrants was almost 50,000 more than the number of domestic leavers, California’s total population still grew last year.
The increase in foreign immigration is one reason why California residents continue to leave. Rampant crime, a hugely overpriced housing market and decades of misrule by leftist politicians at the local and state level have left young people and businesses, in particular, looking for a way out.
Texas has been an attractive destination for the young because of its no-income-tax policy, lower cost of living and employment opportunities in tech and energy.
The Texas government has pursued an economic policy designed to lure companies away from California and other states, with the promise of business-friendly regulations. Well over 100 companies have left other states for Texas since 2020, with 40% coming from California.
