Cyprus will launch a new EU-backed repatriation scheme next month, offering financial incentives to Syrian families who voluntarily withdraw their asylum claims and return home.
Migration Minister Nicholas Ioannides said the scheme, running from June 2 to August 31, reflects Syria’s “critical transitional period” following the removal of Bashar al-Assad in December. While returning families will receive €2,000 for the spouse and €1,000 per child, one adult member may remain in Cyprus with a two-year work and residence permit.
The conservative-led initiative targets Syrians currently under international protection or with pending asylum claims. Cyprus, which has one of the highest per capita rates of Syrian migrants in the EU, is coordinating the plan with Brussels.
Officials said 2,500 Syrians have already renounced protection status or withdrawn applications, and around 2,400 have returned to Syria—signalling growing momentum for voluntary return and resettlement efforts.
