Daniel Penny, the former US marine who was acquitted this week of criminally negligent homicide after restraining a passenger on the New York subway, will attend today’s Army-Navy game as a guest of the incoming Vice President, JD Vance.
“Daniel’s a good guy, and New York’s mob district attorney tried to ruin his life for having a backbone,” wrote Vance on Twitter, making reference to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who has received significant backing from George Soros.
“I’m grateful he accepted my invitation and hope he’s able to have fun and appreciate how much his fellow citizens admire his courage.”
President-elect Donald Trump will also be there, as well as Elon Musk, Tulsi Gabbard and Pete Hegseth.
Penny was acquitted of negligent homicide and a more serious case of second-degree manslaughter on Monday.
In May 2023, he was riding a New York F train when Jordan Neely, a homeless Michael Jackson impersonator, boarded the train and allegedly began intimidating passengers.
Penny, backed by witnesses, said that Neely’s behaviour was unlike anything he had ever seen on the subway before.
“There’s outbursts on the train all the time,” Penny said.
“Unfortunately, in New York City, there’s always people coming on and saying, kind of, talking crazy, and this was unlike anything that I’ve ever experienced. It was very serious. I completely believed what he was saying.”
In an interview after his acquittal, Penny said he had no regrets over what he did.
“I would not be able to live with myself if I didn’t do anything in that situation and someone got hurt,” he said. “I would feel guilty for the rest of my life.
The Army-Navy game will begin at 3pm ET. The navy currently leads the series 62-55-7.
