More than a million people have voted in the battleground state of Georgia.
“We have done it! We crossed the 1,000,000 voter mark at around 11:50am. Amazing turnout! So happy for the counties and the voters! Let’s keep it going,” Tweeted the chief operating officer of Georgia’s Secretary of State.
Georgia’s election data hub showed that 1,194,439 early ballots had been accepted as of Friday evening.
The highest number (136,744) of early votes have been submitted in Fulton County, which became the focus of accusations of voter fraud by Donald Trump and his supporters during the last presidential election.
Video showed Fulton County election workers continuing to count ballots late into the night after observers were told to leave. State election officials, including the Secretary of State, said workers were following normal procedures and no fraud occurred.
Fulton County was included in a broader hand-recount of all ballots in the state, and then a machine recount at the request of the Trump campaign.
Joe Biden won Georgia in 2020 by a margin of just under 12,000 votes, a fraction of the difference in 2016, when Trump beat Hillary Clinton by over 210,000 votes.
Current indications suggest that Trump and Kamala Harris are neck and neck in Georgia.
An average of 11 polls taken between 23 September and 16 October shows Trump leading by 1.1 points with 48.7% to Harris’ 47.6% in Georgia.
Beyond Georgia, the total number of early votes cast across 37 reporting states was reported to have broken through the 11 million mark as of around 3 p.m. ET on Friday. Of those 11 million votes, 3.1 million were in-person early votes and 7.9 million were mail-in ballots.
