NIAID Director Anthony Fauci for once was unable to spin an answer when asked why Texas COVID cases were dropping after Gov. Greg Abbott fully reopened the state.

When asked on MSNBC what he “makes of” COVID cases dropping after the state reopened businesses 100%, Fauci didn’t have a concrete answer.

“It can be confusing, because you can see a lag, or a delay, because often you have to wait a few weeks before you see the effect of what you’re doing right now,” Fauci said.

Fauci, Biden’s coronavirus task force director, then surmised that people in Texas “doing things outdoors” could explain the dropping COVID cases.

“I mean, there are a lot of things that go into that…I’m not really quite sure. It could be that they’re doing things outdoors,” he said.

Fauci insisted he hopes cases continue to “tick down”, but then criticized Texas again for lifting restrictions in the first place, saying “we’ve been fooled before.”

“I hope they continue to tick down,” Fauci said. “If they do, that would be great, but there’s always the concern when you pull back on methods, particularly things like indoor dining and bars that are crowded, you could see a delay and then all of a sudden tick right back up. We’ve been fooled before.”

Last month, Fauci asserted that Texas opening back up was “risky and potentially dangerous” that could lead to another coronavirus surge.

“I think it’s risky and potentially dangerous,” Fauci said. “If you look at the numbers, we are not out of the woods yet. When you pull back on all mitigation methods, on all public health guidelines, that’s when you get into trouble.”

Abbott fully reopened Texas 26 days ago and dropped the mask mandates, citing declining COVID cases, hospitalizations, and a wider availability of the vaccine.
