An illegal alien from Guatemala has been charged with second-degree attempted murder after he allegedly attacked a man with a pickax in Tennessee this week, according to reports.
The disturbing incident unfolded just before 11 a.m. on Sunday morning in Knoxville.
Authorities were called to a residence in West Knoxville where they found a man in bed with a pickax embedded in his skull, WBIR reports.
A witness told officers they had awoken to see a man hacking the victim in the head with the tool before fleeing the scene.
The victim was rushed to the University of Tennessee Medical Center where he was treated for serious injuries. He was listed in stable condition as of Thursday.
Authorities believe the suspect and victim were known to each other prior to the attack.
Later that day, a man identified as Jeinson Hernandez-Moran, 26, turned himself in and was charged with attempted murder in the second degree.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement lodged a detainer against Hernandez-Moran and the Department of Homeland Security later confirmed he is in the country illegally.
Hernandez-Moran is a citizen of Guatemala who entered the U.S. at an unknown location and time, indicating he is one of countless “gotaways” currently living throughout the country.

Hernandez-Moran is scheduled to appear at a preliminary hearing in Knox County Criminal Court on September 18.
