Kamala Harris has partnered with massively popular online shooter Fortnite to promote her election campaign, but one crucial thing is missing: the guns.
Fortnite is an online third-person shooter that requires players to eliminate all the other players on the map in order to win.
The Harris map, called “Freedom Town,” follows the game’s winning formula but expects the players to “squad up, go vote and fight for freedom” without the benefit of any of the game’s signature guns.
Instead of shooting each other, players must hunt out special items like lost Harris campaign posters in a city bedecked in Harris propaganda, completing benign tasks to score enough points to win. The soundtrack is provided by Megan Thee Stallion, who performed at a Kamala Harris rally.
Needless to say, the cross-promotion has not been a hit with fans. In a period of 24 hours, less than 400 people played the new map. The game has over 400 million registered players worldwide, and one of the standard maps is likely to have over 300,000 participants in a 24-hour period.
As Zero Hedge notes, this failed stunt isn’t just a—costly—embarrassment for the Harris campaign. It’s also a warning, because if Kamala Harris bans guns in the virtual realm, what’s she likely to do in real life?
The NRA has called Harris an “existential threat to the Second Amendment,” in response to her political record and recent statements in which she said gun laws, including background checks and red-flag laws, need to be tightened.
The Vice President has hit back by claiming she is a gun owner herself.
“I’m a gun owner, too. If somebody breaks in my house, they’re getting shot,” Harris told Oprah Winfrey, back in September.
