An illegal alien from Honduras is facing a slew of charges after he allegedly ran a red light while drunk-driving at extreme speed and slammed into another vehicle in Georgia, killing the driver, according to reports.
The horrifying tragedy unfolded at around 1:30 a.m. on Dec. 15 in Chamblee, a small city in DeKalb County.
Investigators say Christian Fernando Irias-Ruiz, 20, was traveling at 100 mph when he blew a red light and T-boned a car driven by 37-year-old Jimmy Chang.
Chang was killed in the collision, Irias-Ruiz and two of his passengers suffered injuries, and a motorist in a third involved vehicle was also injured, WSBTV reports.
Irias-Ruiz was driving without a license, insurance, or valid registration, police say.
He was hit with a raft of charges, including homicide by vehicle in the first degree, endangering a child by driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, reckless driving, speeding, and possession of alcohol by someone under 21.
Additionally, Immigration and Customs Enforcement has lodged a detainer against Irias-Ruiz with the DeKalb County jail.
Irias-Ruiz was apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol after he illegally crossed the southern border into South Texas in June of 2021, sources told Fox News.
He was subsequently released into the interior under circumstances that remain unclear.
“It’s not going to bring my brother back, but hopefully justice will be served,” Chang’s brother Jason told WSBTV. “We’re kind of at a loss of what to do now.”
“It’s devastating for all the family right now, still can’t process that he’s gone. He impacted a lot of lives.”
Chang was a well-respected realtor who served as president of the Atlanta Chapter of the Asian Real Estate Association of America.
