A Travis County judge signed an order blocking the arrests of the House Democrats who are refusing to return to Texas to vote on election reform legislation in a special session.
Democrat State District Judge Brad Urrutia signed a temporary restraining order late Sunday restricting Governor Greg Abbott (R) and House Speaker Dade Phelan from “detaining, confining or otherwise restricting” House Democrats in the state or issuing any arrest warrants.
The order expires in 14 days unless Urrutia extends it. Abbott and Phelan must argue to the court on August 20 why the order must be rescinded.
In July, over 50 House Democrats fled Texas in a private jet to Washington, D.C., during a 30-day special legislative session invoked by Abbott to block the passage of election reform bills.
Abbott threatened to arrest the Democrats upon their return and confine them to the Texas Capitol until they vote in the special session.
“As soon as they come back in the state of Texas, they will be arrested, they will be cabined inside the Texas Capitol until they get their job done,” Abbott said.
“If they do not return to work, they risk losing their jobs as state representatives for not showing up.”
Only two Democrats returned from the nation’s capital to Texas. A couple others reportedly flew to Portugal for vacation.
