Businessman Jonathan Hayes spoke with the BBC this week about his experience stopping the Southport, England, killer as well as the ensuing protests and government reaction.

Hayes was stabbed in the leg when he tried to disarm the man who killed three young girls and stabbed several others attending a Taylor Swift-themed dance party last week.
Following the incident, many angry locals began protesting and the demonstrations spread across the country.
The murder suspect was a UK citizen born to migrants but according to Hayes, the deadly attack was only the straw that broke the camel’s back when it comes to immigration.
“I actually don’t think the trouble and the riots has got anything to do with the Southport stabbings. There appears to be a strong undercurrent of discontent for some time about the levels of immigration and this is just the catalyst or a trigger and I don’t think it’s the root cause, ” he said.
Noting he’s not “politically motivated,” Hayes added, “I do get dismayed when I hear Keir Starmer and Yvette Cooper talking about the police are gonna come down with the full force of the law on these people. But, they’re not actually talking about the root cause and they need to start listening and understanding that they need to address the cause rather than the symptoms.”
“Putting these guys in prison isn’t going to deal with the core issues. They don’t condone the violence, but there’s an asful lot of unhappy people in this country at the moment that want something to be done and I don’t think, until they start to address that, that this problem’s gonna go away.”
