Gary Mooneyham, a U.S. military veteran with two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart for his time fighting in Vietnam, told WATE this week that his mortgage company is threatening to kick him off his property if he doesn’t pay for his house that was completely destroyed by Hurricane Helene in September.
A resident of Eastern Tennessee, Mooneyham says the company is now coming after him because he’s late on payments.
Floodwaters swept away his house along with several other homes in his neighborhood.
Mooneyham explained that as he sat on his front porch during the storm, he “watched the house across the road from me wash away first, and I didn’t expect it to come no further.”
The veteran said emergency responders forced him to evacuate his property, which he did not want to leave.
He also noted his home was not located in a flood zone as he purchased the property using a VA home loan and the VA doesn’t do mortgages for properties in flood zones.
Tennessee Farmers Mutual Insurance Company is now refusing to cover the damage, telling Mooneyham his policy “excludes water damage.”
Since he stopped paying his monthly mortgage, the lending company Freedom Mortgage has allegedly threatened to kick him off his property.
âI was asking for help on my mortgage and everything because I still owe $85,000 on this patch of dirt right here,â Mooneyham told WATE. âThey want their mortgage payments. They will want their money, but Iâm not giving it to them because I ainât got nothing to give for.”
He added, âI told them you come up here and build my house or help me get it back, Iâll start paying the mortgage again or go to foreclosure.”
After risking his life in the Vietnam war, the 100% disabled veteran said he simply wants his home back so he “can die in peace,” saying, “I thought I was going to live and die here.”
