A new poll shows that Donald Trump has opened up a 7 point lead over Joe Biden, whose approval rating has sunk to a new record low.
The Washington Post/ABC News poll found that 49 per cent of respondents say they will definitely or probably vote for Trump, or that they lean towards voting for Trump, while Biden only nets 42 per cent when all those categories are combined.
The poll also showed that Biden’s approval rating has slipped to 36 per cent, down from 42 per cent in February. That’s the lowest figure recorded in any Post/ABC News poll to date.
The figures make grim reading for Biden, especially since he only announced he would seek a second term late last month.

Registered Democrats are still split 47%-47% on whether the party should nominate Biden or someone other than Biden in 2024, while 77 per cent of independents who lean Democratic want to see the 80-year-old replaced by a different candidate.
A significant drawback remains Biden’s physical and cognitive health, with 63 per cent of voters believing he lacks the mental sharpness to secure and oversee another term in office, while 62 per cent think he lacks the physical attributes.
Breitbart notes that “this is the first establishment media survey showing Trump as the favorite for the White House from either party as spring turns to summer in 2023.”
Trump still has to take the Republican nomination to face off again against Biden, although 51 per cent of Republicans say they want him to be the nominee compared to just 25 per cent who support Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who has yet to enter the race.
The economy remains a major problem for Joe Biden, with 54 per cent of respondents saying he has performed better than Biden, who enlists the support of just 36 per cent of voters on this issue.
Trump is attempting to become the first president since Grover Cleveland back in 1892 to re-capture the White House having lost a presidential election.
