A New York Times reporter is facing backlash on social media after she posted a string of now-deleted tweets suggesting supporters of former president Donald Trump should be considered ‘enemies of the state’.
Katie Benner, the Justice Department reporter at the Times, took to social media Tuesday amid the first hearing of the House Select Committee investigating the January 6 insurrection at the US Capitol.
In her tweets, Benner argued that the committee ‘underscores’ what she said are ‘legitimate national security threats’ and cast doubt that the committee, which was appointed by Nancy Pelosi, would find a solution.
Benner has since removed the tweets, saying they were ‘unclearly worded’.

Her now-deleted string of tweets read:
‘Today’s #January6thSelectCommittee underscores the America’s current, essential natsec dilemma: Work to combat legitimate national security threats now entails calling a politician’s supporters enemies of the state.

‘As Americans, we believe that state power should not be used to work against a political figure or a political party. But what happens if a politician seems to threaten the state? If the politician continues to do so out of office and his entire party supports that threat?
‘This dilemma was unsolved by the Russia probe and 2 impeachments. With many Republicans denying the reality of the Jan. 6 attack, I doubt the #January6thSelectCommittee will resolve it either. That leaves it up to the voters, making even more essential free, fair access to the polls.’
