President Trump has the support of 53% of Americans as he enters the third week of his new presidency, according to a new poll from CBS News.
Trump had a net negative approval rating for most of his first term.
A majority of respondents answered that terms like “tough,” “energetic” and “efficient” best characterize the President. A significant majority—70%—said Trump is fulfilling his campaign promises.
On specific issues, 59% agree with his stance on immigration and 64% agree with his decision to send troops to the southern border. Trump’s flagship policy of mass deportation has already seen around 11,000 migrants deported to Mexico from the United States, and some immigrants are now being sent to Guantanamo Bay for processing.
Most respondents also favoured tariffs, but only on Chinese goods.
Although a majority supported Trump’s handling of the Israel-Gaza conflict, just 13% supported the idea of the US taking over the Gaza Strip, with 47% opposing it.
Opinions were also divided over Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency. Just under a quarter said DOGE should have “a lot” of influence over government spending, while 31% said “none.”
