The Democrat-led Senate has rejected an amendment sponsored by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) to block illegal aliens from receiving any benefits from the COVID-19 stimulus bill.
The effort failed in a 49-50 vote along party lines on Saturday morning.
“This amendment before us today provides that the stimulus checks should not go to illegal aliens in this country,” Cruz said while introducing the amendment on Friday.
“The question for the American people to answer is, ‘Should your money, should taxpayer money be sent, $1,400, to every illegal alien in America?’”
Democrat Sen. Dick Durbin (Ill.) claimed Cruz was lying to the American people about where the stimulus is going.
“The statement of the senator from Texas is just plain false. False! Let me be clear, undocumented immigrants do not have Social Security numbers and they do not qualify for stimulus relief checks,” Durbin said.
But a memo by Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.), chairman of the Republican Study Committee (RSC), found that the $1.9 trillion COVID relief bill is stuffed with “special interest pork and other liberal goodies”, including language that could allow stimulus payments and healthcare benefits to go to illegal aliens.
This comes as Republican leader Kevin McCarthy (Calif.) signaled his willingness to negotiate with Joe Biden blanket amnesty for tens of thousands of illegal aliens in the U.S.
