South Korea Declares Martial Law

The South Korean President is at odds with a parliament controlled by the opposition party and is allegedly facing numerous corruption allegations, according to the AP.

Potentially of note, China announced on Tuesday that it is banning the export of gallium and other key electronics materials to the U.S. after the U.S. curbed computer chip-related exports. South Korea ranked third in electronics exports globally in 2022 according to the Observatory of Economic Complexity (OEC).

On Tuesday South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared emergency martial law and claimed his political opposition had been sympathizing with North Korea, controlling the parliament and paralyzing the government with anti-state activities.

“Yoon made the announcement during a televised briefing, vowing to ‘eradicate pro-North Korean forces and protect the constitutional democratic order.’ It wasn’t immediately clear how the steps would affect the country’s governance and democracy,” the AP said Tuesday.

According to the AP, Yoon’s approval rating had plummeted in recent months and he had been struggling to push his political agenda in a parliament controlled by the opposing party.

The South Korean President took office in 2022 and is a member of the conservative People Power Party. The opposition comes from the liberal Democratic Party, which has been battling the conservatives over next year’s budget bill.

“He [Yoon] has also been dismissing calls for independent investigations into scandals involving his wife and top officials, drawing quick, strong rebukes from his political rivals,” the AP said Tuesday. “The Democratic Party reportedly called an emergency meeting of its lawmakers following Yoon’s announcement.”
