According to the AP, Yoon’s approval rating had plummeted in recent months and he had been struggling to push his political agenda in a parliament controlled by the opposing party.
The South Korean President took office in 2022 and is a member of the conservative People Power Party. The opposition comes from the liberal Democratic Party, which has been battling the conservatives over next year’s budget bill.

“He [Yoon] has also been dismissing calls for independent investigations into scandals involving his wife and top officials, drawing quick, strong rebukes from his political rivals,” the AP said Tuesday. “The Democratic Party reportedly called an emergency meeting of its lawmakers following Yoon’s announcement.”
