A higher proportion of Republican women now own guns than Democrat men, according to new Gallup polling.
While gun ownership among Americans remains steady at around 30%, the total figures mask a change in demographics, as a “sharp increase in ownership among Republican women offsetting declines among Democratic and independent men.”
Gallup grouped its figures for gun ownership in six-year groupings since 2007, and showed that the percentage of Republican women owning weapons increased from 19% in 2007-2012 to 33% in 2019-2024.
Over the same period, gun ownership among Democrat men fell 7% to 29%.
Ownership among independents fell 5% to 39%.
Republican men still remain by far and away the most likely to own guns, at 60%.
On the whole, men still remain twice as likely to own a gun than women. However, the gender gap has shrunk significantly since 2007-2012, from 30% to 23%.
Rural residents are also significantly more likely to own a gun than city residents. Just over 50% of rural residents own a gun, against 20% of city residents. 67% of men living in rural areas own guns, 62% of rural Republicans, and 59% of rural Southerners.
