Joe Biden is simply too old to run for re-election, warns The Atlantic.
In a political column Thursday, the globalist publication joined the growing chorus of worried Democrats anxious the 79-year-old will attempt another shot at the presidency.
“Let me put this bluntly: Joe Biden should not run for reelection in 2024. He is too old,” writes Atlantic editor Mark Leibovich.

The article goes on make the case for Biden abandoning 2024 presidential ambitions, and calculates his age during a hypothetical second term, after which he’d be over 85-years-old.
“Biden will turn 80 on November 20. He will be 82 if and when he begins a second term. The numbers just keep getting more ridiculous from there.”
The Atlantic‘s distressed article comes as White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre claimed on Twitter Monday Biden “plans to run in 2024.”
To be clear, as the President has said repeatedly, he plans to run in 2024.

“Luckily, the message came equipped with everyone’s favorite political qualifier—’plans to.’ Plans, after all, can change. In this case, the sooner the better,” Leibovich suggests.
According to Leibovich, Democrat “whispers” over Biden’s age referred to by the New York Times in an article over the weekend could evolve into shouts if he doesn’t voluntarily step aside.
The older Biden gets, Leibovich admits, the more he will confirm Republican “smears” of him as a “doddering and demented old puppet,” even though Biden already will “sometimes mangle sentences, blank on names, get tortured by teleprompters, lose his train of thought, or not make sense—which is not so abnormal for someone his age.”
While the borderline octogenarian is in generally good health on paper and appears able to carry out his term, he shouldn’t continue doing so “a day after January 20, 2025,” Leibovich states, going on to make an analogy of Biden’s age if he were a major airline pilot.
As a point of professional comparison, Biden would be enjoying his 15th year of retirement if he had spent his career as a commercial airline pilot, or his 24th year if he had been an air-traffic controller. There’s a reason the FAA mandates compulsory departure times for these positions (65 for pilots, 56 for controllers). These are life-and-death tasks that demand peak stamina and mental acuity. The pressure can be crushing, burnout is rampant, and no one wants to see grandpop in the damn cockpit.
Leibovich also notes the overwhelming amount of Democrats interviewed by the Times who expressed “deep concern” about Biden’s age was “rather jarring.”
The Atlantic editor notes Biden dutifully carried out his role, which was to present an “electable” alternative to Trump, and should now step aside; however, instead he appears to be on a kamikaze trajectory that will cost Democrats dearly in the midterms and possibly in 2024.
Swing voters, independents, and Republicans who voted for Biden in 2020 are among the most unenthusiastic to the idea of his running again, says Sarah Longwell, the Republican political operative who hosts the podcast The Focus Group for The Bulwark. They mainly cite his age, she adds. And Republican voters give every indication of being far more motivated right now than Democrats, many of whom are sounding alarmingly demoralized. It hurts to even imagine what another Biden-Trump race could look like.
Leibovich goes on to fantasize how Biden choosing not to run for president could galvanize the party and “unleash a profusion of youth and energy into the Democratic field,” with candidates like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg filling the field.
Leibovich also attempts to entice Biden with promises that he’ll “be praised for knowing when to step aside” if he decides not to run,” and claims “gratitude would flow” and that “A historic credit would be due to Joe Biden.”
The Atlantic‘s lack of support for a second Biden term comes as the New York Times interviewed several Democrats who were worried about his age and the party’s dwindling morale in the face of several economic crises and an inevitable red wave this November.
