After the November 5 election, what happens on the border?

As Kamala Harris partisans are quick to remind us, border crossings have been down for the past year (though still higher than the lowest year during the Trump administration).

This is because of a deal struck between the Biden administration and the Mexican government, in December of 2023. The goal was for Mexico to reduce the quantity of people crossing its territory to enter the U.S., which would improve optics for the Biden-Harris campaign.

This is not some crackpot conspiracy theory.

Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO), Mexico’s president until October 1, openly admitted the deal in a 60 Minutes interview with Sharyn Alfonsi in March.

From the interview:

Sharyn Alfonsi: “President Biden called you. He sent his Secretary of State. What did they say to you and what did they ask for from you?”

Presidente AMLO: “For us to try and contain the flow of migration.”

As a result, the quantity of unauthorized border crossers did decrease, although as Andrew Arthur of CIS points out, “Border Patrol apprehensions are down… On the other hand, total CBP encounters are running just short of the all-time record set in FY 2023.” But here we’re talking about unauthorized crossers encountered by Border Patrol.

Yet, that too may be about to change. The whole world knows that we have an election on November 5, and plenty of people want to cross the border before then, fearing that a certain candidate threatening to close the border might win.

But regardless of who wins on November 5, what incentive would Mexico have to crack down on the migrant flow right after the election? None whatsoever.

Todd Bensman of CIS has written about this issue, and on October 23 had a story published in the UK’s Daily Mail.

Bensman visited the Tapachula area of Chiapas state in eastern Mexico. He reports that there are now “thousands of migrants – from all over the world – joining a new rush traveling north from southern Mexico toward the U.S. border, less than two weeks before the presidential election.”

“The migrants I spoke to on the road this week believe that this may be their last chance. Many of them hope to reach the U.S. before November 5 because they fear that, if Trump is re-elected, he’ll close the southern border and enforce longstanding immigration laws,” Bensman wrote.

They’re getting some help from the Mexican government: “The caravans that I traveled with were escorted by Mexican National Guard escorts, something that I have witnessed. Perhaps, it’s not only the migrants growing restless, so, too, are the authorities.”

After November 5, the Mexican government may just quit trying to stem the flow.

Here at Border Hawk we can’t endorse candidates. But we can report on who foreign migrant invaders endorse.

Bensman shared these comments from migrants:

  • “I love Kamala Harris.” – a Venezuelan
  • “If [Trump] wins… one has to do what the government says, [wait] for my turn.” – Carlos of Honduras.
  • “We do not like Donald Trump, because he don’t like us.” – Kamala supporter from Ghana
  • “If after election day [Harris is elected], we know that everything is good, then we can enter.” – Another man from Ghana who plans to wait until after the election to enter the U.S.
  • “We know that if Donald Trump wins, all the migrants will be kicked out the [United States]… we hope that he doesn’t win.’ – a Venezuelan
  • “Donald Trump, no.” – another Venezuelan. Bensman reports that, as he said those words, he was “shaking his head and dragging his thumb across his throat in a slicing motion.”

Just think, that guy may soon be your neighbor!

Consider that there is a two-and-a-half month gap between Election Day and Inauguration Day.

So even if Trump wins, he wouldn’t be president until January 20, 2025.

There will likely be a post-election border rush regardless of who wins.

But whoever is victorious will determine immigration policy after January 20.

So, if you haven’t already, get out and vote for your favorite candidate on November 5!
