During yesterday’s debate over the new Ukraine spending bill in the House of Representatives, Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) claimed that events on the Ukraine-Russia border should take precedence over events at the actual US border with Mexico.
“Some say, well, we have to deal with our border first. The Ukrainian-Russian border is our border!
“It’s the border between depraved autocracy and freedom-loving people seeking our democratic way of life. Do we have a stake in that outcome? Yes. Undeniably yes.
“Will we rise to the occasion? Will we stand shoulder to shoulder with our Ukrainian brothers and sisters, who for 1151 days have been holding off the depraved thuggish dictator Vladimir Putin, who has respected no norms of warfare?
“He’s targeted children and hospitals and schools. He’s bombed apartment blocks, killing thousands.”
The spending bill passed yesterday, with the help of Speaker Mike Johnson. The news that an extra $60.8 billion will now be available to Ukraine was greeted with jubilation by President Zelenskyy, European leaders including Poland’s Donald Tusk and NATO leader Jens Stoltenberg.
It was greeted with dismay by many Republicans, including Marjorie Taylor Greene, who referred to speaker Johnson as a “lame duck” and suggested that support for his removal as Speaker was growing.
“This is the third betrayal by Mike Johnson,” she said in a fiery interview with CNN outside the Capitol.
“He delivered a two-part Omnibus, funded the Department of Justice, 91 federal indictments against President Trump, funded the FBI that raided Mar-a-Lago, gave them a brand new FBI building, funded Joe Biden’s open-border policies that are killing Americans every single day.
“Then he reauthorized FISA that spied on American citizens, spied on President Trump’s campaign, and he voted against the warrant requirement, the same warrant requirement that he was for six months ago! And then he did this bullsh*t in here in the House floor, the foreign-war package that does nothing for America. It’s unbelievable.”
She added that, “If we had the vote today in our conference, he would not be speaker today.”
