Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced tariffs on US goods in retaliation for President Donald Trump’s imposition of 25% tariffs on Canadian goods.
According to Prime Minister Trudeau, Canada will match the US tariffs, at a rate of 25%.
Trudeau said the tariffs would raise the cost of goods for US consumers, and cautioned President Trump to “partner with Canada, not punish us” if his goal is to “usher in a new ‘golden age’” for the US.
Trudeau has also said he is considering non-tariff measures, including “some relating to critical minerals, energy, procurement, and other partnerships.”
Using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, on Saturday President Trump imposed 25% tariffs on all Mexican imports; 25% tariffs on all Canadian imports, except energy, which will be subject to a lower rate of 10%; and 10% on all Chinese imports.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he imposed the tariffs “because of the major threat of illegal aliens and deadly drugs killing our Citizens, including fentanyl. We need to protect Americans, and it is my duty as President to ensure the safety of all. I made a promise on my Campaign to stop the flood of illegal aliens and drugs from pouring across our Borders, and Americans overwhelmingly voted in favor of it.”
Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has also said she will impose tariffs in response to President Trump’s.
In a post on X, Sheinbaum said, “If the United States government and its agencies wanted to address the serious consumption of fentanyl in their country, they could, for example, combat the sale of narcotics on the streets of their main cities, which they do not do, and the money laundering generated by this illegal activity that has done so much harm to their population.”
