Woke students and faculty of Portland State University flipped out over a social justice thought experiment conducted by former assistant professor of philosophy Peter Boghossian.
“Following the unexpected cancellation of our Reverse Q&A at Brown University, we created an ad hoc event on the streets of Portland. Here, we are exploring the reasoning behind agreement or disagreement with the claim: ‘There are only two genders,’” Boghossian described on his YouTube channel.
Boghossian, author of “How to Have Impossible Conversations”, designed a critical thinking and moral reasoning experiment to establish consensus on contentious topics, in this case whether there were only two genders.
Boghossian arranged seven lines of tape on the floor, each labeled with a level of agreement: strongly disagree, disagree, slightly disagree, neutral, slightly agree, agree and strongly agree. Volunteers began on the same line and moved to the line that they felt represented their stance on different topics, in this case, whether there were only two genders.
The experiment didn’t get very far before a group of Portland State students began harassing Boghossian from the social work department’s roof, and eventually confronting him in person.
“Some of our trans students saw the statement ‘There are only two genders’. It was pretty activating and upsetting not knowing the context, we thought it was sort of a statement that was being made, but not a thought exercise necessarily,” one student said.
Another student said he had a problem with what the exercise “looks like.”
“What does it look like to see five white men with a sign that says ‘there are only two genders’?” he asked.
“Why did you identify us on the basis of our race?” Boghossian retorted.
The woke students and faculty continued to lecture Boghossian about his race, age, and class privilege, and accused him of “harming” students by posing the question of whether there are actually two genders.
