A simulated newscast of a nuclear attack on US soil produced by the federal government during the height of the Cold War has surfaced after decades of being hidden from the public.

Never-before-seen 1986 footage from the Department of Energy obtained through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request shows a newscast reporting on terrorists who hijacked a nuclear weapon before setting it off in downtown Indianapolis.

The disturbing video was part of a massive intra-governmental training exercise by the Pentagon, CIA, Dept. of Energy, and other agencies code-named “Mighty Derringer”.

The video begins with “Channel 9 Eyewitness News” anchor “Jeff Schwartz” calmly reporting on the fourth day of an emergency situation in Indianapolis where unknown terrorists have obtained a nuclear device and are threatening to detonate it.

“You know that few details are available, but this much we know,” Schwartz tells the imaginary audience. “A large portion of downtown Indianapolis remains evacuated. Now, reports are sketchy at this point, but we do know that apparently there are terrorists holed up in the downtown part of our city with nuclear devices.”

“But we have just learned here at the Channel 9 newsroom that a federal response team has been sent in to neutralize the threat,” the broadcaster says before the video pans to reporter “Anne Miller” sitting in a helicopter.

“We’ve just passed over the speedway. We’re heading East towards downtown,” Miller says over the loud noise of the helicopter, adding that traffic is eerily light following the evacuation orders.

“Just how close can we get to where the terrorists have been holed up?” Schwartz asks Miller.

“The FBI and police have cordoned off the area and they’ve restricted airspace above it,” Miller replies. “We’re headed in that direction now. But we can only….”

At that moment, a bright white flash overwhelms the screen followed by buzzing static and dead video feed.

The feed returns to Schwartz in his newsroom, where he assures the audience that “chopper nine” just experienced a “technical error” before a loud boom suddenly goes off.

“Oh my God,” a frightened Schwartz says as he looks up, before his own broadcast is abruptly cut and the video ends.

According to historian Jeffrey Richelson, who obtained FOIA documents about the exercise in 2012, the terrorists were from the fake country of Montrev (Mexico), and the exercise took place in Camp Atterbury, Indiana, near Indianapolis, and Area A-25 of the Energy Department’s Nevada Test Site.

This classified Mighty Derringer exercise was a massive whole-of-government effort to determine how to respond to a nuclear event in America.

From Richelson’s research:

The scenario allowed for all aspects of a possible response to a nuclear terrorist/extortionist threat to be practiced – from initial assessment of the threat to the management of the “consequences” of a detonation. The documents posted cover, with varying detail, the core aspects of a response – intelligence collection, technical and behavioral assessments, search, access/defeat of terrorist forces, recovery of a device, diagnostics, hazards and effects estimation, disablement and damage limitation, safe transportation of the device, and consequence management of a detonation. In addition, they also concern a variety of important aspects of a response – including security, command and control, communications, logistics, radiological measurement and containment, weather forecasting, public information, and interaction with local officials.

The documents also identify the large number of organizations involved in the exercise. There is NEST and the organizations that contributed members or capabilities – including Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and contractor EG&G.

Additional organizations whose participation is evident include the State Department, Central Intelligence Agency, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Joint Special Operations Command, Special Forces Operation Detachment – Delta (Delta Force), several military explosive ordnance disposal units (from the Army and Navy), the Federal Radiological Monitoring and Assessment Center, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The timing of this footage’s release doesn’t bode well with recent developments in Ukraine.

Russia threatened the use of nuclear weapons if Ukraine joins NATO, prompting Joe Biden to refuse ruling out a nuclear “first strike” option against Russia.

Such provocative actions, combined with a recent string of reckless remarks made by Biden in Europe, have led nearly 80% of Americans to believe Biden’s mishandling of the Ukraine-Russia crisis could lead the U.S. into nuclear war.
