Surveillance video out of Charlotte, North Carolina, this weekend shows the harrowing moment a city bus driver used a firearm to defend himself from an armed unruly passenger who demanded to be let out at an undesignated stop.

Footage of the May 18 incident surfaced Monday showing 22-year-old passenger Omarri Tobias, who reportedly did not pay, telling bus driver David Fullard to let him off near a McDonald’s.

More on the incident from WSOC-TV:

When the bus driver said he could not do that, the passenger replied, “I’m going to pop you…I dare you to touch me.”

The passenger then showed a gun to the bus driver causing the driver to pull out his own gun. The driver fired first, striking the passenger. The passenger then shot back, according to reports.

The passenger, who was seen on surveillance, ran off after being shot in the stomach.

Tobias was reportedly transported to the hospital facing life-threatening injuries, according to Fox News.

The driver was also shot in the arm amid the shootout, however no other passengers were injured.

Tobias was arrested on charges of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injuries, communicating threats, and carrying a concealed firearm.

Meanwhile, the driver was fired for violating a policy that prohibits city employees from possessing weapons while operating city vehicles or while on the job.

Speaking to Fox News, a city rep stated: “We believe that the situation could have been de-escalated because the bus operators are trained on de-escalation… And so just because the operator wasn’t at a bus stop, he could de-escalate it by letting the gentleman off the bus if he could have pulled the bus over safely to let him off.”

The bus driver’s attorney argued Fullard carried a weapon in order to protect himself because he felt unsafe and feared for his life.

Despite being fired, the driver’s decision to carry his firearm in defiance of city rules may have saved his life.
