The sheriff of Wyoming’s lone Democrat stronghold has snubbed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) nearly every time his office has been asked to hold a criminal suspect who may be in the U.S. Illegally in the past two years.

Since February of 2023, the Teton County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) has received 118 detainer requests from ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations, 103 of which were reportedly ignored or sabotaged.

ICE revealed this information in response to a dispute between Teton County Sheriff Matt Carr, the first Democrat to hold the position, and Rep. Harriet Hageman (R-WY).

“There were scores of individuals being held in the county jail who met the agency’s threshold for being detained and deported,” Rep. Hageman stated in a recent newsletter emailed to constituents.

“ICE requested the Teton County Sheriff’s Office to first hold these individuals in custody and to then transfer them to ICE for having violated immigration law, but the sheriff’s office chose to release them, thereby foiling ICE’s efforts.”

Sheriff Carr pushed back on those claims, saying he has cooperated with ICE in instances when a judge signs off on a hold, but fears a lawsuit if he detains a suspect for too long, despite that being standard practice amongst sheriffs throughout Wyoming.

ICE now says TCSO has failed to honor nearly 90% of detainer requests since Sheriff Carr informed ICE his office would be changing key immigration-related policies back in early 2023.

“Teton County Sheriff’s Office does not notify (ICE’s operation) before releasing noncitizens from their custody, limiting (our) ability to take timely action on these cases,” ICE explained to Cowboy State Daily in a statement.

In August, ICE collaborated with the U.S. Marshals’ Violent Offender Task Force to arrest six suspects during a targeted enforcement operation in Teton County, while six remained on the loose.

“Teton County does not honor lawfully issued ICE detainers. Teton County has released criminal illegal aliens despite the fact that ICE has requested them to be held pursuant to U.S. immigration law,” Rep. Hageman said in her newsletter. “It is my understanding that every other county in Wyoming honors ICE detainer requests; the very ones that Teton County refuses to acknowledge.”

“The people in Teton County and the surrounding area should be terribly concerned that (authorities are) releasing illegal aliens into the community, that have criminal records or that have been arrested for things that would actually qualify for them to at least go through the process for deportation.”

InfoWars regularly covers ICE arrests of dangerous illegal aliens who have been released or protected by authorities in sanctuary jurisdictions – including many who are suspected or convicted of homicide or heinous crimes against children.
