Texas Gubernatorial candidate Robert “Beto” O’Rourke appears to have once again changed his tune on gun control, quietly editing his campaign website to say he no longer supports civilian ownership of so-called assault rifles.
The stealth edit appeared on a page dedicated to “Gun Safety,” where Beto once said he’d like to “reduce the number” of AR-15s and AK-47s in the public space.
An older version of the page recorded on the Internet Archive shows this was Beto’s position as late as April 1 this year.
However, sometime within the last two months, the failed US senate candidate appears to have updated his website to reflect a hardline stance on “assault weapons,” now saying, “I don’t believe any civilian should own an AR-15 or AK-47.”
The quiet change is a reversal back to an original position for Beto expressed during his doomed 2020 presidential bid, where he affirmed to Americans he would definitely confiscate firearms if elected president, saying, “Hell, yes, we’re going to take your AR-15, your AK-47.”
Later asked by CNN how he expects to “take” all the “assault weapons,” Beto said he would pass a law initiating a compulsory buyback scheme, but he became visibly flustered when pressed on whether he expects criminals to follow the law.

Asked again in November 2021 whether he stood by his remark to come after guns, he reiterated his radical stance against firearms and the Second Amendment.
“Look, we are a state that has a long, proud tradition of responsible gun ownership. And most of us here in Texas do not want to see our friends, our family members, our neighbors shot up with these weapons of war. So yes, I still hold this view,” O’Rourke said, this time vying for the governor’s seat after having failed to defeat incumbent GOP Sen. Ted Cruz.
The stance appears to have softened some time this year, with Beto telling reporters in Tyler, Texas, in February he’s no longer “interested” in grabbing guns and instead wants “to make sure that [what] we do is defend the Second Amendment.”
In the wake of the tragic shooting in Uvalde, and after pulling an idiotic stunt in front of grieving parents, it seems Beto can’t seem to let go of his gun-grabbing roots.
