A teen suspected of carrying out an armed robbery that went sideways when a Louisiana shop manager open fire on him and his 16-year-old accomplice has been identified as an illegal alien who crossed the southern border last year as an ‘unaccompanied minor.’
Teony Umanzor-Juarez, 18, was arrested last week following the deadly incident, which unfolded just before 8 p.m. on Tuesday night in New Orleans.
Two young males wearing masks entered Sam’s Meat Market and pointed guns at employees, surveillance footage shows.
After acquiring money from the registers and grabbing multiple cell phones, the suspects were moving through the store when suddenly an employee grabbed a firearm of his own and started shooting.
Both suspects were struck, one of whom managed to escape.
Cecil Batiz, 16, later succumbed to his injuries, while Umanzor-Juarez was eventually arrested and hit with felony robbery and gun charges.
Additionally, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has placed a detainer on Umanzor-Juarez, as he is a Honduran citizen who entered the U.S. illegally.
“According to ICE, Juarez was seen by the U.S. Border Patrol on April 14, 2023, near Eagle Pass, Texas and was processed as an unaccompanied juvenile. He was charged with criminal possession of a weapon by the New York Police Department on Sept. 21, 2024. The case is still pending,” WDSU reported on Sunday.
